Welcome to aerial arts class at Xelias!

We are glad that you are here. Here is some information to help you know what to expect and to make your experience more enjoyable...

What to wear? ...

  • Tight-fitting workout clothes with pants that cover the knees work well. Keep in mind that you will be upside-down A LOT. Leotards are best; jeans are discouraged. Men - please wear supportive undergarments.
  • In cooler months a warm cover-up will keep your muscles warm between turns. In warmer months, it's nice to have a small towel.
  • You will be barefoot in class.
  • ALL jewelry is unsafe for you and for our equipment - please store it safely away until after class.

What to bring? ...

  • WATER. It is very important to stay hydrated!
  • A notebook will help you remember your new skills.
  • A positive attitude! Circus arts may be hard int he beginning; don't get discouraged! You will be amazed how much strength you will gain by the end of the session. Although it can be painful, circus is FUN! Keep trying, and remeber that the phrase, "I can't is not in our vocabulary here at Xelias.
  • An open mind! We will challenge you. Be open to trying new things. We would never ask you to do anything unsafe. Having trust in yourself and in us as coaches is a large part of the learning experience here.

Safety? ...

  • Tell your coach if you have any injuries. Xelias coaches have years of experience and can often find a variation of a skill that works better for your body.
  • Have a coach with you unless you are instructed to practice on an apparatus independently.
  • Use a spotter. If you are learning a new skill or feel unsure, ask a coach to spot you.
  • Listen to your own body. We will push you for stamina. Ask to rest if you need to do so.
  • Drink water!

Class etiquette ...

  • Be on time. Warming up is important. It helps you avoid getting injured. Be aware that a class or rehearsal may be starting immediately following yours. Help them start on time, too.
  • Be clean and odor-free. Avoid perfumes, wear deoderant and clean clothes for the sake of others around you.
  • Avoid lotions or oils on class days. They will make you slippery when you sweat and make the equipment slippery for the next person.

Helpful tips ...

  • Make sure you have eaten enough to have energy and mental focus for class. Try not to eat a large meal at least 1 hour prior to class.
  • Athletic tape will protect the skin on your feet while you are learning to climb the rope; however, remember that the more your skin is exposed, the easier and faster you will develop calluses.
  • As your skill level progresses, knee and ankle braces purchased at any drug store will make you more comfortable on most apparati. Again, however, please remember that as a part of your growth, you will build up a tolerance to any pain you may feel at first. Most times you will find that after a while you won't need the braces any more.
  • Let us know how we can help! All Xelias coaches are available to teach privately to help you reach your performance/fitness goals or to develop your special act.
